Come and feel the new flash storage for data centers

by admin

It’s not every day you can feel and test a million-dollar piece of hardware So, we have a new Violin Memory system, and I invite you to take it for a test drive. Yes, by the way, it was at one of those test drives that we were the ones who turned off a working rack in the data center with a switch on a dare. But we won’t do it this time.

What is this iron in a couple of words?

It is a storage device that holds read response times and writing about 1ms under high load and still gives the smallest price per I/O operation in the known galaxy. The main vocation in life is to remove “bottle necks” in a bunch of cases.

Whom I call :

  • Those who process small amounts of data (up to 50TB), where response time and input/output operations per second are extremely critical.
  • Those who have Oracle, 1C, SAP or similar large-scale systems, or complex analytical queries (on regular storage systems “chewed” for 10-15 hours).
  • Those who are interested in solutions from $300 kilobucks to about a million. That is clearly not a small business.
  • Business unit managers who have sysadmins complaining about the performance of their storage systems.
  • Managers of data centers and similar sites to evaluate how to save money.

Case Studies :

  • Suppose a query is made to perform an analytical operation that consists of 10, 000 transactions to different databases. If you put all the databases on Violin, the speed will increase 10-11 times. Because with a normal system, each transaction takes 2-3-4 milliseconds, and here – one. One foreign bank made such a request on the usual storage for 300 minutes, after the introduction of Violin – for 11.
  • In large-scale virtualization for thousands of machines. For example, at the beginning of the day, when all call center employees log on via thin clients, the load on the storage is very high (a so-called bootstorm occurs), and Violin, due to its full flash architecture, copes with this.

About the prices

  • Yes, it’s expensive when you don’t have high performance tasks.
  • It’s advantageous when you need high speed.
  • With the right tasks, it’s more profitable than buying a storage system with 10-15 flash drives.
  • Saves space : Violin system is 3 units, similar storage system is up to 2-3 cabinets. So, in the long run, saving money again.
  • Saves on complex software licenses : usually minus 70% of the cost.
  • Beneficial when the speed of customer service is stymied by the speed of the application.

What exactly will be on the test drive?

A presentation about “what it is in general and when it is useful, ” plus you will be able to touch the live system. It’ll be right there on the table, and it’ll be open, and there’ll be lights on, and you can poke your finger at any part of the system and ask what it is. And plus real load testing.
Practice shows that several IT-specialists or heads of departments from large companies gather for such test-drives, so if you plan to chat “for life” and exchange experiences (which happens very often), then add another half an hour to the plan. I’ll just be showing you how it all works and talking about my implementation experience.

Time and date

The first will pass March 19 2013 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the second March 26 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Location – CROC office at 5 Volochaevskaya str. 1 (this is Moscow).
