Review of the first Nokia Lumia 2520 tablet

by admin

Rumors about Nokia’s “big” device have been circulating for half a year.Fueled by numerous rumors and teasers, the public wondered what kind of device it would be (there were even versions of a Windows Phone tablet or a laptop). All the veils were dropped last October on Nokia World conference. Abu Dhabi, where we unveiled the first tablet
Windows RT 8.1.

Not so long ago Nokia Lumia 2520 reached Russia, and because of that we decided to arrange a detailed review of this device.
Looking ahead, it is worth noting that Nokia Lumia 2520 – does not immediately reveal itself. It is not a typical mobile device for content consumption, as you might think at first. Rather, it is a tablet with wide possibilities for its (content) creation. In this case, you can not say that Nokia Lumia 2520 was released with the expectation to replace modern laptops. However, the ability to solve many work and creative tasks suggests that this tablet is more than just a gaming and entertainment platform – a kind of device “all-in-one”. But first things first.

Body

The design of the Nokia Lumia 2520 tablet is an embodiment of the stylistic decisions of the latest models of the Nokia Lumia line in the form factor of a tablet device.

The body material is the traditional polycarbonate for our flagship devices. The tablet is available in black, blue, white and red color, but in Russia Nokia Lumia 2520 is available only in red and black. It is noteworthy that the Lumia 2520 differ not only in color, but also in the type of coating: black model has a matte finish, and the red – glossy.

Even in its red color, the tablet does not look like a frivolous gadget. It’s more of a catchy “high-tech”, making it stand out from the mass of competitive devices.
Almost the entire area of the front panel is a 10.1-inch screen with Gorilla Glass 2 from Corning. Through it you can see the front camera and the information LED. In addition, the only visible elements on the front are the touch ‘Windows button’ and the speaker sockets.

Despite the large screen diagonal, in the hands of the tablet does not seem bulky and leaves the impression of a gadget, easy to use on the go. This is evidenced by the actual size of the device: 267 x 168 mm and a thickness of just 8.9 mm. The weight of the tablet is 615 grams.

On the monolithic back surface, only the main camera peephole and the Nokia logo stand out. All other elements of control and data transfer are placed on the edge. There are: the on / unlock buttons, the slot for the memory card and SIM card and an interface for connecting additional accessories.

Here you can also see the microUSB 3.0 and microHDMI connectors, a standard 3.5mm headphone jack and a charger jack. The latter, thanks to its shape, is reminiscent of the classic Nokia chargers.

Hardware features

As we mentioned above, the screen diagonal is 10.1 inches at a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels and a density of 218 ppi. As on most Nokia smartphones, the Lumia 2520 LCD screen is based on IPS technology. From its “little brothers” the novelty has received and ClearBlack technology

Thanks to the presence of additional layers, the ClearBlack screen minimizes glare and keeps the image saturated and readable. In practice, Lumia 2520 in various lighting conditions (reading news feeds and social networks in public transport, using as a navigator in the car, casual games at home and partial writing of this post in the office) we can say that the readability of the screen has always remained at a comfortable level.
The high brightness and wide angles of the matrix also contribute to the quality of the screen. The declared brightness value is 650 nits (cd/m²), but in practice it can be higher (for example, in the test Hi-Tech@Mail.ru it was 731 nits (cd/m²)). Even with a directional light source, it is possible to work on the tablet, e.g. by holding it at an angle.

The next important point in the description of the Nokia Lumia 2520’s power supply is its “heart and brain” – Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 800 processor. Nokia was one of the first manufacturers to use this system-on-a-chip (SoC) for tablets in principle and in the area for Windows 8.1 RT devices in particular.
The system itself is made using 28-nanometer technology. It includes four Krait 400 processing cores running at 2.2 GHz, an Adreno 330 GPU, a Hexagon v5 DSP with 4G LTE support, USB 3.0 and Bluetooth, and the ability to display images on screens with a resolution of 2560 x 2048 pixels.
The Nokia Lumia 2520 comes with 2GB of RAM by default and 32GB of internal storage for the system, apps and user content. A microSD card slot will increase the user’s “personal” space by another 64 GB.
We will talk about applications later, but in the context of performance it is worth noting that this configuration provides smooth multitasking. Especially since the applications retain all functionality when switching between them.
Windows RT 8.1on the Nokia Lumia 2520 also allows you to work in multi-window mode, where apps share one screen. This is very handy, for example, if your news feed has moved into the social media space. Now you do not have to constantly switch between the browser and the Twitter (VKontakte, Facebook) feed, but open links in a parallel window. Moreover, the size of these windows can be adjusted to your liking.

By the way, to work with Internet content in the device provides not only Wi-Fi, but also the aforementioned 4G-module. This solution, we note, is not yet so common among Windows tablets. If we talk about local data exchange between devices, the “big” Lumia supports Bluetooth 4.0, microUSB 3.0 and even NFC.
Review of the first Nokia Lumia 2520 tablet
The tablet is equipped with two built-in cameras: the main camera with Zeiss optics (!) has a resolution of 6.7 MP, and the front – 2 MP, and both cameras support recording in Full HD.
Using the latest generation components (such as the Snapdragon 800 system-on-a-chip, SSD, etc.) and the features of Windows RT 8.1, the device is highly energy efficient. This, combined with a powerful 8120mAh battery, provides up to 25 days of standby time and 11 hours of uninterrupted video playback.
Nokia Lumia 2520 is charged with a dedicated charger and supports the fast charging feature, allowing you to recharge 80% in just one hour.
To conclude the review of Nokia Lumia 2520 hardware capabilities, we offer to see the results of PC Benchmark, 3DMark Ice Storm Unlimited, Disk Bencmark, GFXBenchand nCore CPU Mark:

Windows RT 8.1

There are many differences between Windows 8.1 and Windows RT 8.1. While the former is designed for x86/ x64 architecture, RT is exclusively for mobile ARM. This means that “classic” applications will not run on Nokia Lumia 2520.
Review of the first Nokia Lumia 2520 tablet
However, if you look at it from the perspective of the average tablet buyer and compare it specifically to mobile operating systems, Windows RT has a number of advantages.
Unlike other systems, file management in Windows RT is not implemented as a complex third-party application, but is a familiar to the eye “explorer”.
The start screen with tiles is sharpened for gesture control and combines the informativeness of widgets with the simplicity of application icons.
If you have Windows 8.1 installed on your PC, it will automatically sync its settings and apps (including their placement on the Start screen) to your Lumia 2520. To do this, all you have to do is log in to your account.

However, back to the point where we started talking about Windows RT 8.1.

Applications

The traditional arguments of Windows RT opponents are the lack of “classic” applications and the modest assortment of the Store. However, classic Windows apps are not optimized for touch control, and the official app store can no longer be called small – 200, 000 apps as of the end of 2013. Many major publishers and services have already released or are about to release their apps for the platform.
A lot of “gaming” giants like Gameloft (Asphalt 8), Disney, Microsoft Studios have started to confidently master the WinRT platform. The hardware capabilities of Nokia Lumia 2520 are enough to cope with any of today’s tablet hits.

In the Lumia 2520 all of the above is complemented by the (familiar to owners of Lumia smartphones) exclusive from Nokia. The branded apps currently include: Nokia Camera, HERE Maps, Nokia Mix Radio, Nokia Stories and a few more apps.
“Nokia Camera”, so beloved by Lumia users, is a shooting application with a user-friendly interface, fine-tuning of shooting parameters and high-quality frame processing. All of the above, of course, has been optimized for the tablet.

This application allows you to make a choice: let the “Nokia Camera” algorithms determine the parameters or adjust the white balance, focal length, ISO values, shutter speed and exposure as you wish.
“HERE Maps” – detailed maps, proven not only on Nokia smartphones, but also on a number of navigation systems of various car manufacturers. The app has an offline navigation mode.To do this, it is enough to load maps into the memory of the device in advance. In online mode, the user gets dynamic data on the traffic congestion in real time. But HERE will be convenient to use not only for motorists, but also for pedestrians and people travelling by public transport, because HERE can also build such types of routes.

“Nokia Stories.” – A different perspective on the photo gallery in your smartphone or tablet. Using HERE geolocation information, this app places icons of photos and videos on a world map to create a kind of “journey in pictures”.

Nokia Mix-Radio is an audio streaming service. It offers the user the opportunity to listen to music not only by artist and song, but also in special editorial, as well as user selections. The service can also work in offline mode.

Also in the arsenal of the tablet from Nokia is a simple tool for video editing Nokia Video Director, an informative interactive “guide” to the tablet “My Nokia” and the application “Notifications from the operator, ” which allows you to receive service messages from the service provider.

Nokia Lumia 2520 as a tool for work

We purposely took this section outside of apps because we decided to look at the Nokia Lumia 2520 from a different perspective, namely as a replacement for a work laptop.
First of all, I would like to note that all owners of this tablet by default get the basic package of Microsoft Office applications, which includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote. The applications do not differ from their x86 counterparts and with basic tasks like creating tables or demonstrating presentations (remember the microHDMI socket) Lumia 2520 users will cope with them easily.

In addition, users can download Office enterprise applications from the Store: Lync for communication with colleagues, conferencing, video calling, SharePoint Newsfeed for getting news and participating in discussions from SharePoint sites, and Microsoft Power BI for ongoing access to Microsoft Office 365 reports.

Microsoft Power BI
Another important point for using Nokia Lumia 2520 in organizations is the ability to work Nokia Lumia 2520 in the corporate network, using a VPN connection. The network parameters are set through the general settings of the tablet.
For those whose work involves Microsoft Dynamics in one way or another, the Microsoft Dynamics CRM , Dynamics AX 2012 Approvals , Dynamics AX 2012 Expenses and Dynamics AX 2012 Timesheets
Microsoft Dynamics CRM is a “dashboard” for tracking and managing your organization’s CRM base. The last three apps allow you to manage approvals, reports and timesheets in Dynamics AX 2012. All apps are available for free in the Windows App Store.
You can also find appts there My Server 2012 and My Server 2012 R2 to work with Windows Server 2012 Essentials and Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials, respectively. Through the interface of these applications, you can manage users, devices, alerts, and access shared files. In addition, files recently accessed through the My Server app will be available even offline, which is handy if you work with them while traveling or on the subway, for example.
To create simple applications, for example, for personal or internal corporate use, you can resort to the help of Microsoft “Project Siena”. You don’t need any special coding skills to create a product catalog or an interactive FAQ. You can read more about how to work with this application here

What else? Unfortunately, to list all the available applications for solving business tasks with Nokia Lumia 2520 will not be enough even a few posts. However, one thing is certain: there are professional applications in the Store – and in sufficient quantity. And it can be as convenient for any user functional app, such as photo editor Adobe Photoshop Express as well as highly specialized and narrowly focused applications like medical applications for patient data SAP EMR Unwired
