The court sided with Apple on the slide-to-unlock rights issue
Patent disputes between the giants of the mobile industry continue, and it’s unlikely to end anytime soon. The name of Apple comes up most often in such disputes – it seems that it sues everyone it can. Recently, the corporation has lost several lawsuits (including a dispute with Samsung).
But now the company has still managed to win another dispute over the ownership of the slide-to-unlock display unlocking technology. The dispute was between Apple and Motorola. However, this decision is only relevant for Germany, because the trial itself was conducted in this country.
Nevertheless, Motorola lost, which does not happen very often with this company. Naturally, Motorola representatives have already announced that this court decision will not have any meaning for the company’s business. However, according to some analysts, the Cupertino company can expand its victory – the court may side with the company in other countries. And then the display unlock feature in the Android OS, familiar to many, could change beyond recognition.
Nevertheless, there is still a long way to go. Moreover, the other day Google received a patent for its own slide-to-unlock technology, which is different from the one used in Apple smartphones. Well, because Google will soon become the rightful owner of Motorola Mobility, it will be able to use this technology. So everything is still very uncertain – luck or rather, the opinion of the court may lead to a victory for both Apple and Motorola, or rather, Google.
