Why I threw away all the old DVDs/CDs or how my content consumption has changed

by admin

Over the weekend I accidentally went to sort through the junk on my shelf and found a stack of neatly stacked DVDs/CDs.There turned out to be over a hundred of them.Among them were both purchased and burned discs. There were movies, cartoons, and music on them.
Why I threw away all the old DVDs/CDs or how my content consumption has changed
I collected them because I hoped to review and listen to them someday. But more than ten years passed, and I never got my hands on any of them. All that good stuff went in the trash.
Things have changed. Now I have nowhere to put them and nothing to play them. The development of high-speed Internet, cloud and streaming services has changed my world of content consumption. I now use streaming services on a subscription basis.
Why a subscription? Because for a ridiculous monthly fee I get access to all the new releases in awesome quality from all the devices available to me. In this article I want to talk about a few services and applications that I use for content consumption.
Maybe in a few years these ways of consuming content will be obsolete… we’ll see 🙂
I’m an avid Androidfan, hence the devices
– TV without SMART, but with a Minix NEO X7 Android set-top box connected
– NEXUS 5 Android phone
– Samsung Tab 2 Android tablet
So we will talk about applications and services for Android. It is clear that there are other analogues, but I have described exactly what I use myself.

Music

My choice stopped at Google Play Music For only 159 rubles per month I get access to almost all the musical heritage of the planet and musical innovations. You can listen to songs from Android device, as well as from browser

Based on my preferences (likes of songs) the service can play random selections. 90% of the time I like the system’s choices 🙂

Movies

My choice has settled on Google Play Movies Always available with many movies in great quality. Many new releases. Renting a movie from 49 rubles. Buying a movie is always 3-4 times more expensive. I usually take a movie to rent, since the likelihood that you will go back to watch it again is very small 🙂 But I buy cartoons, children love to watch the same movie many times. The movie can be downloaded to Android devices for offline viewing with the kids on a long trip. And at home I watch on the TV through the Android set-top box. You can also watch movies through browser

Lifehack : Did you know that if you use a Google Play Music subscription, you get 10% off movies and apps on Google Play.

Books

This is where my choice fell on Bookmate You can read both in a browser and through mobile app (offline as well). A huge advantage is the synchronization. That is, I read books on the phone on the road, and at home on the tablet. And I start reading exactly where I finished reading.

I really liked the social component of the service, when you can watch what your friends read, share their impressions of the books they read, and look at the shelves of other readers, which presents a lot of interesting things.
On "standard" subscription for 150 rubles a month you get access to most books, but on "extended" for 269 rubles to all the bestsellers and supernovelties.
Lifehack: It is better to pay by card or through Google Play. When you pay via PayPal, the payment is charged in dollars at a not entirely favorable rate 🙂

For children

There’s a great app Hobby games – educational games Inside the app dozens of interactive magazines on various topics for children from 2 to 6 years. For only 100 rubles per month I get access to dozens of magazines. The kids love to work with them and learn something new from them about dinosaurs, our planet, the structure of the universe, time, days of the week, and more.

Lifehack : there’s another cool app Tales and books for kids But my kids have grown out of fairy tales and so I unsubscribed from this app

To summarize

Total per month I spend :
159 rubles. (Google Play Music) + 120 rubles. (2-3 Google Play Movies) + 269 rubles. (Bookmate premium subscription) + 100 rubles (Children’s apps) = 648 RUB per month.
Much or little is up to you. A good book costs from 300 rubles.
But I’ve already made my choice. For only 648 rubles a month I get :

  • Access to a huge selection of content music, books, movies
  • quick and easy search of legal content
  • content synchronization between different devices
  • Great quality videos, music, books and apps
  • ability to download content to watch, listen, and read offline

Disadvantages :

  • monthly installments
  • there is a chance that the services I use will suddenly close and I will lose my history and everything I have purchased
  • need the internet to download content for offline viewing
