Yandex announced the closure of Yandex.Store
August 28, 2020 Yandex announced that the Yandex.Store app store is closing on September 1. It can no longer be downloaded and installed on smartphones. Already installed applications will continue to work and can be updated through other stores.
App developers will receive an updated license agreement by September 30, which will allow them to continue working with Yandex and distribute apps through retailers and the Yandex.Auto platform. By October 31, 2020, developers must receive information from Yandex about the payment arrangements for paid apps distributed through the Yandex.Store.
Yandex at the moment did not explain the reason for closing the service.
Yandex.Store for Android devices was launched February 25, 2013. Yandex.Store has hardly evolved in recent years, although initially Yandex positioned it as a full-fledged alternative to the Google Play store. Mobile device manufacturers and cellular operators could integrate the Yandex.Store into their models for free and receive a portion of their sales revenue. Yandex.Store was also put by default in Yandex’s own firmware for Android devices – " Yandex.Kit ". To quickly fill the store for the opening, Yandex purchased a license for 40, 000 apps from another alternative store, Opera Store.
When the project was launched, Yandex called its store a strategic move to create a suite of products for device manufacturers that would combine Yandex’s core services: search, navigation, the Yandex.Disk cloud service and the Yandex.Shell graphical shell.
As of early 2014, more than 100, 000 apps were available in the Yandex.Store service, and the service itself was preinstalled on some popular smartphones of the time from OPPO, PocketBook, Explay, teXet, Huawei, WEXLER, 3Q, Qumo, Nokia and others.
Information about the closure of Yandex.Store first appeared at the end of June 2020. As the company explained, the project was planned to be closed in order to reallocate the team’s efforts and attention to promising projects and not to slow down the pace of development.
Terms of use Yandex.Store service have not changed since March 29, 2017.
